The “0.01mm Tolerance” Trap in Deep Draw Stamping
Every procurement manager has seen it: a supplier sends a quote for custom deep draw stamping parts and slaps a “0.01mm Tolerance!” guarantee on the PDF. It looks great on paper. But when the actual steel or aluminum enclosures arrive, they do not fit the mating components, the drawn walls are dangerously thin, and the bottoms have micro-tears that leak instantly. Why? Because holding 0.01mm tolerance on a raw sheet metal stamping part without secondary CNC machining is physically impossible.

High-precision deep drawn aluminum and brass components manufactured by MSTFab, featuring consistent wall thickness and crack-free corners.
When sourcing deep drawn metal parts (whether aluminum, brass, or stainless steel), cheap job shops will tell you whatever you want to hear. They promise aerospace tolerances at dollar-store prices. But bad tooling design leads to extreme springback, galling, and metal fatigue.
At MSTFab, we manufacture genuine ISO9001-certified deep draw stamping parts. We do not sell fake tolerances; we sell real engineering solutions. Here is what OEM buyers should actually look out for.
1. Deep Drawing vs. Metal Tearing
Deep drawing forces a flat sheet of metal into a deep cavity. If the drawing speed is too fast, the die clearance is wrong, or the lubrication is cheap, the metal will simply tear at the corners. Many cheap suppliers try to hide these tears by aggressively polishing the parts or covering them with thick powder coating. But the structural integrity is already gone.

We use multi-stage progressive drawing dies to gently form the metal in calculated steps, preventing wall thinning and ensuring the bottom radius remains perfectly intact.
| Common Pain Point | Cheap Job Shops (The Nightmare) | MSTFab OEM Standard |
|---|---|---|
| Corner Tearing | Forcing the draw in a single stage, ripping the metal. | Multi-stage deep drawing with calculated draw ratios. |
| Fake Tolerances | Promising 0.01mm on raw stamping to win the order. | Realistic ISO9001 stamping tolerances, with CNC finishing if ±0.01mm is truly needed. |
| Galling (Scratches) | Using cheap dry tooling, leaving deep gouges on the walls. | Premium die lubrication and hard-chrome plated punch surfaces. |

We utilize high-tonnage hydraulic presses to ensure smooth, continuous material flow during the deep drawing process.
2. Material Selection: Why Brass and Aluminum Crack
Not all materials are born equal. Brass is highly ductile and excellent for deep drawing, but if the supplier uses cheap, recycled scrap brass, it will suffer from “season cracking” months later. Aluminum is great for lightweight enclosures, but if the wrong temper (like 6061-T6) is forced into a deep draw, it shatters like glass.

Our engineering team specifies the correct deep-drawing alloys (such as Aluminum 5052-O or high-grade Brass) to prevent material fatigue.
We perform a complete DFM (Design for Manufacturing) review before cutting any tooling. If your drawing specifies a material that cannot survive the draw ratio, we will immediately recommend the correct alloy and temper to ensure production success.

Stainless steel deep drawing requires specialized tooling clearance to account for massive springback and work-hardening.
3. The Ironying Problem: Managing Wall Thickness
When a part is deep drawn, the bottom remains the original thickness, but the side walls stretch and become thinner (called “ironing”). If the wall becomes too thin, the part will fail under pressure. Cheap suppliers ignore this. They quote based on the flat blank thickness and let the side walls stretch until they are paper-thin.

We strictly monitor ironing percentages, ensuring that the final wall thickness remains within your engineering specifications.
MSTFab controls the material flow through precision blank holders. We ensure that your drawn enclosures, motor housings, or sensor caps maintain their required structural integrity from top to bottom.
