Search intent: process handoff checklist

Use this page when process handoff is the risk

Most rework is not caused by one bad machine. It happens between steps: cut features that fight bending, bend errors that fight welding, and coating that hides a thread. This page follows the handoff points.

This page has been separated from the integrated workflow article so Google and buyers can see the job of this article clearly. The useful question here is not “can someone make metal parts?” It is: what should a buyer check before sending drawings, approving a quote or moving into production?

  • Confirm flat pattern revision before laser cutting starts.
  • Review bend sequence before holes and tabs become inaccessible.
  • Plan weld fixtures around final geometry, not just flat parts.
  • Mask threads and grounding points before finishing.
  • Measure critical dimensions after the last process, not halfway through.

Many OEM metal parts need more than one process. A bracket may require laser cutting, CNC bending, welding, PEM hardware, powder coating and inspection. This guide helps buyers check the complete process route before RFQ, so each supplier quotes the same scope.

Quick answer: for cutting, bending and welding projects, define the process route, critical dimensions, fixture needs, weld appearance, hardware scope, finishing, inspection and packaging before comparing supplier quotes.

Start With the Process Route

Do not ask suppliers to quote only from a flat pattern if the final part is a finished welded assembly. The quote should show what is included and what is excluded.

  1. Laser cutting or punching for blanks, holes and slots.
  2. CNC bending for flanges, mounting features and formed geometry.
  3. Welding or spot welding for strength and assembly.
  4. Hardware insertion for PEM nuts, studs, standoffs or hinges.
  5. Surface treatment such as powder coating, plating, brushing or anodizing.
  6. Inspection, packing and shipment.

BendingBend radius, tooling, sequence and critical dimensions.Hole shift, interference and tolerance issues.
WeldingWeld type, fixture, distortion control and finish grinding.Warping, weak joints and cosmetic rejects.
HardwarePart numbers, hole sizes, insertion direction and pull-out check.Spinning inserts and assembly failure.
FinishColor, coating thickness, masking and appearance standard.Thread blockage, color mismatch and corrosion risk.
PackagingPart protection, labels, carton, pallet and moisture control.Transit damage and receiving confusion.

What to Ask Before Choosing a Supplier

  • Which steps are performed in-house and which are outsourced?
  • What DFM risks do you see in this drawing?
  • Which dimensions will be inspected after final assembly?
  • Can you provide first article photos or reports before batch production?
  • How will finished parts be packed for export shipment?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not compare suppliers by cutting price only?

The lowest cutting price may exclude bending, welding, finishing, inspection or packaging. Compare the complete process route and total landed cost.

When is a first article needed?

Use first article inspection for new suppliers, new welded assemblies, tight tolerances, cosmetic finishes or parts that affect final equipment assembly.

What is the biggest RFQ mistake?

Sending only a flat file for a part that also requires forming, welding and finishing. The supplier needs the final assembly requirements to quote correctly.

Send Drawings for Quote

Attach one file, up to 10 MB (STEP/STP, DXF/DWG, PDF, ZIP, or an image). Include material, quantity, and finish details for an accurate quote.
