Sheet Metal Fabrication Capability Checklist for OEM Buyers

CAPABILITY VERIFICATION

A sheet metal fabrication capability statement is useful only when it connects equipment and processes to your material, geometry, quantity, tolerances, finish and inspection plan. A machine list answers what is present; a capability review answers whether the proposed route fits the part.

Material specification reviewed before sheet metal fabrication
Material family, grade, thickness and evidence requirements should be confirmed for the actual order.

Start With the Part, Then Map the Process

Part requirementCapability questionEvidence
Material and thicknessCan the specified grade and form be sourced and processed?Quote baseline, identification and document route
Cut geometryAre edge condition, hole size and downstream bends compatible?DFM notes and sample inspection
Formed geometryAre bend access, tooling, springback and sequence understood?Forming plan and first-article dimensions
Welded assemblyHow are datums, fixtures, sequence and distortion controlled?Approved route and post-weld checks
HardwareAre part numbers, access and installation checks defined?BOM and fit verification
FinishWho controls pretreatment, masking, appearance and rework?Approved route, sample and inspection record

Material Capability Is More Than a List of Alloys

Confirm exact grade, product form, thickness, surface condition, temper where relevant, substitution rules and evidence. Availability changes by quantity and market, so the approved quotation and purchase specification should control the order rather than a permanent website list.

Carbon steel

Review grade, thickness, forming, weld route, pretreatment and final corrosion protection.

Galvanized steel

Define base steel, coating designation, cut-edge treatment, welding effects and finish compatibility.

Stainless steel

Specify grade, finish, grain direction, contamination control and weld appearance requirements.

Aluminum

Specify alloy, temper, thickness, bend behavior, joining and cosmetic-surface protection.

Do Not Ask for One Universal Tolerance

Achievable variation depends on feature type, size, material, thickness, datum strategy, number of bends, welding, finishing, measuring method and production quantity. Put functional limits on the drawing and identify critical features. Let noncritical geometry use an agreed general tolerance only where it is appropriate.

Formed sheet metal part measured from a drawing-defined datum
Measure critical formed features from the functional datum after the processes that can move them.

Verify Finish and External Processes

Powder coating, wet paint, plating, passivation and specialist testing may involve approved external partners. The buyer should know the route, specification, masking, acceptance evidence and ownership. Outsourcing is not the failure; an uncontrolled handoff is.

Buyer Trust Table

Capability claimEvidence to requestWhat it proves
“Precision fabrication”Part-specific CTQs, process route and sample reportHow precision is defined for this drawing
“All materials”Exact grade, thickness and supply confirmationThe quoted material is available and controlled
“Full-service finishing”Route, responsible supplier, masking and acceptanceThe handoff is visible
“Assembly ready”Hardware, interface, fit and packing checksThe fabricated scope supports integration

Capability Review Checklist

  • Material grade and thickness confirmed
  • Each critical feature mapped to a process
  • Bend and weld risks reviewed
  • Hardware BOM and access checked
  • Finish route and masks defined
  • External processes and owners visible
  • FAI and measuring methods agreed
  • Repeat-order controls documented
  • Packing protects surfaces and geometry
  • Open assumptions listed in the quote

Frequently Asked Questions

Does owning a laser prove a supplier can make my part?

No. Equipment is one input. The supplier must still show a suitable process route, engineering review, inspection method and production control for the drawing.

What tolerance can sheet metal fabrication hold?

There is no honest universal answer. It depends on the feature, material, geometry, process sequence and measurement method. Put functional requirements on the drawing and review them before quotation.

Can external finishing be acceptable?

Yes, when the approved route, specification, supplier control, incoming verification and responsibility are clear.

Match the Capability Review to the Drawing

Guangzhou Maisituo Sheet Metal Manufacturing Co., Ltd., operating as MSTFAB, provides drawing-based sheet metal fabrication. Send the files, material, finish, quantity and CTQs for a route review.
