Do you have a STEP or STP model but no complete 2D manufacturing drawing? That’s entirely normal in modern product development. But passing a raw 3D file straight to a laser cutter without a rigorous engineering review is a recipe for disaster.
MSTFAB provides custom sheet metal fabrication from STEP drawings for prototypes, low-volume projects, and OEM production. Our engineering team actively reviews your 3D model, identifies sheet metal features, evaluates manufacturability, and prepares an iron-clad quotation based on the available design information.

We manufacture custom brackets, panels, chassis, enclosures, machine covers, cabinets, welded frames, and complete sheet metal assemblies.
Can Sheet Metal Parts Be Quoted from a STEP File?
In many cases, yes. A STEP model is often enough to begin an engineering review and prepare a preliminary quotation.
A STEP model allows us to reliably review:
- Overall part geometry and sheet thickness.
- Bend locations and material stretch zones.
- Hole, cutout positions, and assembly relationships.
- Welded structures and expected material usage.
However, a 3D model may not clearly define the design intent behind every single feature. For example, the file may show a hole but not indicate whether it is a loose clearance hole, a tapped hole, a countersink, or a precision PEM hardware location. Before confirming the final quotation, we will request additional information to eliminate dangerous assumptions.
Information Not Usually Included in STEP Drawings
STEP files are fantastic for communicating three-dimensional geometry, but they are terrible at communicating the strict manufacturing requirements that ultimately determine cost, quality, and inspection standards.

Our engineering team performs a deep DFM analysis on your STEP files before any metal is cut.
Important missing details usually include:
- Material grade and exact surface finish (e.g., powder coating RAL color).
- General tolerances vs. critical mating tolerances.
- Thread specifications and countersink angles.
- Welding symbols and cosmetic weld grinding requirements.
For example, a model may show a perfectly round 5 mm hole, but it won’t explain whether that hole must remain exactly 5 mm after powder coating. These missing details drastically affect the manufacturing method and quotation.
Our STEP File Review Process
1. Geometry Check
We confirm that the model can be opened correctly without broken surfaces or duplicated bodies. For complex assemblies, we prefer that you provide the individual part files alongside the complete assembly model.
2. Sheet Metal Feature Analysis
Some models are created by designers as solid bricks rather than true sheet metal components. We identify the sheet thickness, bend lines, and flanges, and crucially, we check whether the part can actually be unfolded into a reliable flat pattern without crashing into itself.

Converting a 3D STEP model into a precise laser-cut flat pattern requires calculating material-specific bend deductions.
3. Manufacturing Process Review
We determine the exact routing required: Fiber laser cutting, CNC bending, punching, drilling, TIG/MIG welding, hardware installation, and powder coating. This defines the production sequence and expected lead time.
4. DFM Feedback
If a feature is guaranteed to cause manufacturing or assembly problems, we will communicate the risk immediately. Any suggested change is submitted for your approval. We never modify your design without authorization.
DFM Issues Commonly Found in STEP Models
A part may look stunning in CAD software but be an absolute nightmare to manufacture.

Catching DFM errors early prevents CNC bending collisions and tooling failures.
Common issues we catch:
- Holes positioned too close to bends (they will deform into ovals).
- Flanges that are too narrow for standard bending V-dies.
- Missing bend reliefs leading to torn corners.
- Continuous welds that are guaranteed to cause heat distortion.
- Cutouts too close to sheet edges.
Materials Available
We commonly fabricate parts from Cold-rolled steel (SPCC), Galvanized steel (SGCC), Stainless steel 304/316, Aluminum 5052/6061, Copper, and Brass.
Aluminum 5052 is often selected for enclosures because of its excellent bendability. Aluminum 6061 offers higher strength but requires far greater attention to bend radius and material grain direction to prevent cracking.
Prototype Fabrication and Inspection
STEP models are ideal for prototype requests because they allow us to understand the complete assembly relationship. A prototype helps you verify component clearance, hardware installation, and the final assembly sequence.

First Article Inspection (FAI) ensures that the physical part matches the critical dimensions of the CAD model.

Finished parts are carefully assembled to verify fit before final packing and export.
Suitable CNC-bent features can often be controlled to approximately ±0.1 mm. However, this does not mean every dimension on every part requires this tolerance. We strongly recommend actively identifying critical hole positions, mating surfaces, and door gaps.
MSTFAB Qualification Evidence (Trust Table)
| Engineering Capability | MSTFAB Execution Standard | Direct Buyer Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| STEP File Translation | Direct import to advanced CAM software with automatic bend deduction calculation. | Accurate flat patterns without manual calculation errors. |
| DFM Risk Analysis | Proactive review of bend reliefs, hole-to-bend distances, and tooling collisions. | Eliminates “unmanufacturable” surprises on the production floor. |
| Process Mapping | Clear definition of laser, bending, welding, and finishing sequences before quoting. | Transparent pricing with no hidden post-production fees. |
| Dimensional Verification | First Article Inspection (FAI) comparing the physical part against the 3D model datums. | Guarantees that your prototype will actually fit the rest of your assembly. |
