The Hidden Dangers of Cheap Pressed Spear Top Picket Fences

A pressed spear top security steel picket fence is supposed to act as a formidable physical barrier for high-security facilities, commercial properties, and luxury residences. However, when buyers chase the absolute lowest price on B2B platforms, they often end up with decorative “garden fences” that bend easily, rust quickly, and offer zero real security.

At MSTFab, we manufacture industrial fencing and custom metal enclosures engineered for longevity. Overseas job shops frequently cut corners by using thin wall tubing (often as thin as 0.8mm) and skipping crucial anti-corrosion treatments. If you want a security fence that deters intruders and lasts for decades, here is what you must check before placing a container order.

1. The Thickness of the Steel Tubing

The most common trick used by low-cost factories is reducing the wall thickness of the steel pickets and horizontal rails. A fence might look imposing in photos, but if the steel is only 0.8mm or 1.0mm thick, a determined intruder can literally bend the pickets apart with their bare hands or a simple crowbar.

We utilize heavy-duty steel tubing with a strict minimum wall thickness of 1.5mm to 2.0mm, ensuring absolute structural integrity.

At MSTFab, our standard specifications dictate a minimum wall thickness of 1.5mm for the vertical pickets and 2.0mm for the horizontal rails. This heavy-duty construction guarantees that the fence panel remains rigid and impassable, providing true security rather than just a visual deterrent.

Loose AssemblyFlimsy aluminum rivets or weak spot welds that break easily.Heavy-duty anti-theft stainless steel bolts or full seam welding.

2. Anti-Corrosion Treatment (The Zinc Factor)

Steel rusts. That is an inescapable fact of chemistry. Many factories will simply spray black powder coating directly onto raw steel tubes. The moment that coating is scratched, or moisture gets inside the hollow tube, the fence begins to bleed orange rust, destroying its appearance and strength.

Our 3-step anti-corrosion process includes pre-galvanization, zinc phosphating, and a premium UV-resistant polyester powder coat finish.

We employ a rigorous 3-step anti-corrosion process. First, all steel tubing is hot-dip galvanized (zinc coated) inside and out. Second, we apply a zinc phosphate conversion layer to maximize paint adhesion. Finally, we apply a thick, UV-resistant polyester powder coat (such as AkzoNobel or Jotun) and bake it at high temperatures. This ensures 10+ years of rust-free performance, even in coastal environments.

3. The Picket-to-Rail Connection

How the vertical pickets connect to the horizontal rails is critical. Cheap tubular fences often use thin, pop-rivets or shallow punch-holes that allow the pickets to rattle, loosen, and eventually fall out over time.

Utilizing specialized punching technology and heavy-duty anti-theft hardware to ensure pickets cannot be removed or twisted.

Depending on the customer’s requirement, we offer two highly secure assembly methods: full 360-degree MIG welding for maximum rigidity, or a specialized punch-and-bolt system using one-way, anti-theft stainless steel hardware. Once assembled, the pickets are locked in place and cannot be twisted or removed by vandals.

4. The “Pressed Spear” Design

The spear top serves two purposes: intimidation and anti-climb functionality. Poor manufacturing leads to dull, poorly formed spears, or worse, separate cast iron spears that are weakly glued or tacked onto the top of the tube and easily broken off.

Our spear tops are formed by high-pressure hydraulic presses directly from the picket tube itself, ensuring they can never be snapped off.

Our “Pressed Spear” design means exactly that. We use high-tonnage hydraulic presses to crimp and form the top of the vertical steel tube into a sharp, formidable point. Because the spear is part of the original steel tube, it is structurally impossible to snap off, providing a permanent anti-climb deterrent.

Don’t Compromise on Perimeter Security.

A cheap, thin-walled fence is an illusion of security that will rust away within a year.
