CUSTOM ENCLOSURE FABRICATION

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) acts as the brain of any industrial automation system. Its enclosure must provide flawless physical protection against dust, water, and EMI while facilitating complex cable routing. MSTFAB manufactures uncompromising, custom empty sheet metal PLC enclosure shells engineered to your exact wiring and thermal requirements.

The Mechanical Challenge of PLC Enclosure Shells

Off-the-shelf electrical boxes often lead to chaos on the assembly floor. Technicians waste hours drilling crude holes for cable glands, stripping paint, and forcing components into tight spaces. A true custom PLC enclosure is fabricated strictly around your DIN rail layout, internal wire ducts, and external interface requirements, guaranteeing a clean, drop-in assembly process.

Precise DIN Rail & Plate Layouts

The internal mounting plate is the foundation. We pre-drill or laser-cut exact hole patterns for your specific PLC racks, relays, and wire ducts, eliminating manual drilling.

NEMA 4 / IP66 Watertight Sealing

Factory floors are routinely washed down. Continuous poured-in-place polyurethane (PU) foam gaskets ensure water cannot bypass the door, protecting expensive logic controllers.

Laser-Cut I/O and HMI Openings

Push-buttons, emergency stops, and delicate HMI touchscreens require flawless cutouts. We laser-cut these features before powder coating to prevent exposed, rusting metal edges.

Custom Bottom Gland Plates

Managing massive bundles of incoming I/O cables is critical. We design removable, custom-drilled bottom gland plates to organize and seal complex cable entries.

MSTFAB’s Manufacturing Route for PLC Shells

Our fabrication workflow is engineered to eliminate assembly bottlenecks. By integrating rigorous DFM review before cutting, utilizing precision fiber lasers, and applying robust anti-corrosion powder coatings, we deliver empty PLC shells that are ready for immediate electrical integration.

1. Layout DFM ReviewAnalyze CAD data to verify HMI bezel clearances, internal DIN rail spacing, and heavy cable routing paths.
2. Precision Laser CuttingCut precise screen windows, connector holes, and mounting plate pre-drills without causing heat distortion.
3. CNC Bending & TIG WeldingForm rigid cabinet bodies and continuous-weld the corners to prevent any twisting that could compromise the door gasket.
4. Powder Coating & MaskingApply industrial surface finishes while meticulously masking grounding studs to ensure life-saving electrical continuity.

Critical Quality Control Gates for PLC Enclosures

We do not rely on assumptions. Quality is verified at specific manufacturing gates. We rigorously test HMI cutout tolerances, latch compression, weld integrity, and coating thickness before the empty shell leaves our facility.

HMI Cutout Tolerances

Expensive touchscreens must drop in perfectly. We verify laser-cut HMI and button hole dimensions against the CAD drawing using digital calipers.

Gasket Compression Testing

A waterproof cabinet depends entirely on the door mechanics. We test latches to ensure they pull the door tightly and evenly against the continuous PU foam gasket.

Mounting Plate Alignment

A warped mounting plate ruins assembly time. We verify hole spacing and ensure the galvanized plate drops cleanly into the chassis mounting studs.

Electrical Grounding Continuity

Powder coating acts as a dangerous insulator. We strictly enforce masking protocols for all internal grounding studs to ensure life-saving continuity.

Material Selection Matrix for PLC Enclosures

Choosing the wrong metal for a PLC enclosure can lead to rapid failure in harsh factory environments. We fabricate using premium grades tailored to your specific deployment scenario.

Material GradeIdeal Deployment ApplicationOEM Procurement Check
Cold-Rolled Steel (SPCC / DC01)Standard indoor PLC cabinets, machine control panels, and factory automation housings. The industry standard. Must be combined with a high-quality industrial powder coating for protection.
Galvanized Steel (SGCC)Internal mounting plates and semi-outdoor enclosures requiring enhanced rust resistance.Mounting plates are often left unpainted (bare galvanized) to provide excellent electrical grounding for components.
Stainless Steel (SUS 304 / 316L)Food & Beverage processing, pharmaceutical plants, and highly corrosive washdown environments.Higher raw material cost. Requires precise passivation of welds. Excellent for NEMA 4X / IP66 washdown requirements.
Aluminum Alloy (5052)Pendant arm operator consoles, lightweight HMI housings, and portable control stations.Lighter weight reduces strain on suspension arms. Excellent natural corrosion resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MSTFAB actually manufacture for PLC systems?

We are a pure custom sheet metal fabrication factory. We manufacture the physical empty sheet metal enclosure body, doors, custom gland plates, pre-drilled internal mounting plates, and mechanical hardware. We do NOT supply PLCs, HMIs, contactors, terminal blocks, or any electrical wiring.

Can you pre-cut holes for my specific HMI screen and buttons?

Yes. If your CAD provides the exact cutout dimensions and tolerances, we will laser cut the HMI window and 22mm/30mm push-button holes before powder coating. This ensures a flawless drop-in fit without exposing raw metal edges that could rust.

Do you provide electrical schematics, PLC programming, or panel wiring?

No. We are a custom mechanical sheet metal manufacturer. Your engineering team must design the electrical schematics and program the logic; we will execute the mechanical build and construct the physical protective shell exactly to your CAD model.

How do you ensure the IP rating of the PLC enclosure?

We achieve high IP ratings (such as IP65 or NEMA 4) through precision CNC bending (to minimize welded seams), expert continuous TIG welding on corners, rigid door frame designs, and the application of continuous poured-in-place polyurethane (PU) foam gaskets combined with high-compression latches.

Can you pre-drill the internal mounting plate for my DIN rails?

Absolutely. Drilling mounting plates by hand on the assembly floor is a massive waste of technician time. If you supply the hole pattern in your CAD model, we will CNC laser cut or punch all the necessary holes for your DIN rails and wire ducts directly into the galvanized mounting plate.
