Electrical Enclosure Sheet Metal RFQ Checklist

What essential specifications must an RFQ include for custom electrical sheet metal enclosures?

A comprehensive custom electrical enclosure RFQ package must define six critical engineering specifications: (1) Target environmental ingress protection standards (explicitly stating NEMA 3R, 4, 4X, or 12, and equivalent IEC 60529 IP ratings such as IP55 or IP66), (2) Continuous Formed-In-Place (FIP) polyurethane or EPDM gasket technology with defined flange compression stops to prevent gasket over-compression, (3) Heavy-duty concealed lift-off hinges and multi-point quarter-turn compression latching hardware, (4) Protective earth bonding callouts including bare-metal masked grounding studs on doors, shells, and sub-panels per UL 508A (≤ 0.1 Ω continuity), (5) Laser cutting DFM details for connector knockouts, conduit gland plates, and filtered ventilation louvers, and (6) High-durability corrosion-resistant surface coatings (ASTM B117 salt spray ratings ≥ 500h for indoor NEMA 12 or ≥ 1000h for outdoor NEMA 4X).

When electrical engineers release Requests for Quotation (RFQs) for custom sheet metal enclosures, ambiguous drawings frequently lead to quoting delays, missing hardware, or failed NEMA testing. Enclosing high-voltage switchgear, sensitive PLCs, and power supplies requires an enclosure that balances precise mechanical tolerances with certified environmental sealing. Supplying an unambiguous RFQ package ensures fast quotation and first-pass manufacturing success.

The 6 Pillars of an Electrical Enclosure RFQ Package

1. Defining True Environmental Ingress Ratings (NEMA & IP)

Never state generic terms like “weatherproof”. Explicitly specify the required rating:

  • NEMA 12 / IP54: Indoor industrial protection against circulating dust, falling dirt, and non-corrosive liquid dripping.
  • NEMA 4 / IP66: Outdoor protection against windblown rain, splashing water, and high-pressure hose-directed water streams.
  • NEMA 4X: All NEMA 4 requirements plus severe corrosion resistance (fabricated from 304 or 316L stainless steel, or marine-grade AL 5052 with C5-M powder coating).

2. Formed-In-Place (FIP) Polyurethane Gasketing

Traditional manually glued strip gaskets exhibit joint seams that inevitably leak under high-pressure water jets. Specify continuous CNC-dispensed Formed-In-Place (FIP) polyurethane foam gasketing. The drawing must incorporate a return gutter channel (knife edge) that directs water runoff away from the gasket seam and limits compression to the optimal 30% nominal height.

3. Grounding Continuity Masking per UL 508A

Electrical safety inspectors will reject enclosures if powder coating insulates grounding studs. The RFQ print must explicitly detail copper-plated or stainless steel weld studs (M6/M8) located on the door, enclosure body, and internal sub-panel. Drawings must include explicit cross-hatch masking notes: “Mask 20 mm circular zone around grounding studs before powder coating to ensure ≤ 0.1 Ω bonding resistance”.

4. Laser Cutting DFM for Knockouts and Gland Plates

Specifying custom cutout geometry up front eliminates field drilling labor. Include exact rectangular cutouts for HMI screens, DIN rail mounting slots, and circular conduit knockouts. Where cable entry locations may vary, design a removable 3.0 mm bottom gland plate with pre-cut knockouts.
